Originally released in 1992, Microsoft Access® is part of the Microsoft® Office Suite. Microsoft Access® is the most popular Windows desktop database used by most organizations around the world, from small to large businesses, government agencies, nonprofits, etc. Microsoft Access® fits a unique space between the skills of the information worker and professional developers. It's a database platform that allows information workers to extend the power of Excel® into database applications. Nonprofessional developers can create their own tables, queries, forms and reports to automate their processes. They can even write their own macros and VBA code to implement custom behaviors. Microsoft Access® can store its own data in its Jet Database format or link to databases on SQL Server, Oracle and other ODBC sources.

Over the years, a large number of Microsoft Access® databases have been created with varying levels of quality and success. There's been a lot of confusion surrounding Microsoft Access® to the extent that people question whether it should even be used in a large organization. What we've found is that it is very appropriate for a large number of environments and situations. Just like any technology, it's a matter of understanding its strengths and weaknesses. Organizations that understand these issues help information workers through training and support to maximize the value of Microsoft Access® while supporting the inevitable evolution of some Microsoft Access® applications to a more professional and robust platform. By leveraging the knowledge and skills of those closest to the needs of the application, organizations can use Microsoft Access® strategically to deliver better services, make better decisions and gain a competitive edge.
